Detail of the lintel at the entrance to the Temple of Bacchus, which admitted only initiates who used opium and alcohol to reach ecstasy during their rituals. Bacchus represented fertility and life over death and the monumental entrance is carved with vines, wheat stalks, and mythological figures.
